World Impact was given tickets to take kids from our community to the Rams vs. Cardinals game. The Ram’s were sponsoring Christian Family Day which is why we were given tickets. We took 8 children from our community and boy did they have a BLAST! One of the girls even won a football autographed by the Rams football team and Pujols from the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

A New Normal

November 12, 2009 by stlouisriggs

We first want to thank you for your prayers and support.  You are a great encouragement to us and are a vital part of our ministry to North St. Louis.  We thank God for you and keep you and your families in our prayers.

Over the last few months we have been on a learning curve.  There are so many things about the inner city that we don’t know.  One of the things that we have learned quickly is that “normal” for us is not “normal” for our community.  We are learning a new normal.

During the long drive home from a week of camp in Kansas we took a break and stopped at McDonald’s to buy the kids something to eat.  We noticed 10 year old Davion having problems figuring out the hand dryer in the bathroom and later having the same sort of problems with the drink machine.  None of us gave it much thought until through a mouthful of burger and fries Davion said, “Man, McDonalds has really good food!”  It was then that one of our leaders asked, “Davion, have you ever been to McDonalds before?”  “No, I ain’t never been to McDonalds” he said, as if it were perfectly normal.  We just looked at each other in disbelief.  Serving among the urban poor had just exposed a new normal.

I waited in the car as Hannah ran into Schnucks grocery to grab a couple of things.  When she came out just a couple minutes later she was in tears.  While she was in the store she had witnessed a grandmother with a fussy young granddaughter.  The lady, overwhelmed with trying to shop and care for the unhappy little girl, stopped everything and started beating the child mercilessly in the middle of the aisle.  But, what overwhelmed Hannah more than anything was that no one said or did anything.  They just went about their shopping.  It was normal.

At a neighborhood cookout hosted at one of our missionary’s homes I was happy to see a young boy from our summer program show up with his dad and older sister.  As I introduced myself to his family however, it was obvious that they were both under the influence of drugs or alcohol, maybe both.  It bothered me.  Not only was he seeing them like this, but his father had driven him to the cookout.  As I shared my frustration with one of our staff members who is from the city, he said, “Yeah, that’s normal.”  But this was a new normal for me, one that I wasn’t comfortable with.

I ask you to join us as we pray for a different “normal” to prevail in the inner city.  We pray that it will be normal for kids to know and live with both parents, that it will be normal for all kids to graduate from high school – not just the 30-some % that currently graduate, that it will be normal to see blocks void of drug dealers, gangs, and prostitutes, and that “pockets” of heaven will appear on earth as the Gospel spreads in North St. Louis!  We thank you for your prayers and are continuously grateful that GOD IS AT WORK IN THE CITY!!

Tony

Randy & Tony playing Chess

“Are you just getting home from church?”  We had just pulled up in front of our house and before we could even get the doors open Tony was there to greet us with his question.  When we confirmed that we had been at church his face fell as he told us how he had knocked on our door the evening before, to ask if he could go with us.  I (Randy) felt badly that we hadn’t been there to answer the door, but I also felt encouraged.  It’s not everyday that a fourteen year old boy from our community is excited about going to church.

Tony stays just down the block from us with his mother, five siblings, a niece and other family members who stay with them from time to time.  He has been involved with World Impact summer programs for the last couple of years, but this summer he was different.  It was evident that God was working in his life.  When we would discuss stories from the Bible he listened intently and would ask thoughtful questions.  Shortly after Hannah and I moved into our home, Tony started hanging around anytime he would see me outside.  He helped me spray weeds, trim fence lines and sometimes would just sit on the porch and talk.

This years’ summer program theme was “Don’t Waste Your Life”.  Each week we focused on a different man or woman from the Bible and talked with the kids about how that person either did or didn’t waste their life.  On one of the last days of the program we talked with them about the story of Jesus and how His life affects everything else, including their own lives.  When we were given time to split into smaller groups I had the chance to speak with Tony alone.  During that time he shared with me how he had confessed and asked for forgiveness of his sin and had given his life to Christ.

I can’t explain how I felt when he told me that.  You see, too often in our neighborhood fourteen year old boys are already actively involved in the drug trade.  Too often they are already entrenched in the gang culture.  Too often they are expected to be the “man” of the home, as Tony is.  But not nearly often enough do we see fourteen year old boys who will make a bold decision to serve Jesus Christ and to allow Him to control their lives.

Later in that same conversation Tony told me how he had started reading his Bible on his own.  No one had told him too, he just decided he wanted to know more.  We talked about meeting together on a weekly basis in a mentoring relationship.  He agreed to meet regularly and seemed excited to get started.

As we sat on our front porch steps chatting that Sunday morning after church, Tony stopped, looked at me and asked, “Are we still going to do that role model thing?”  I assured him that we were.  As the last few weeks have passed I have continued to be encouraged by his eagerness to learn.  It is clear evidence that GOD IS AT WORK IN THE CITY!!

Mona Evelyn Riggs

August 4, 2009 by stlouisriggs

Well, it’s been a while since we have posted anything on here.  I feel somewhat bad that it has been over a month and this is the first birth announcement for Mona.  As you can imagine we have had a little bit of adjusting to do with the new arrival and we seem to finally be getting adjusted to the new “normal”.  The past month has been great!  Mona just had a doctor’s appointment today and weighed in at 9 lb. 7 oz., almost 3 lbs. over her birthweight!  We will be adding more pictures later but to catch everyone up the following is a journal of events from Hannah leading up to Mona’s birth.

Sunday, June 28th

This morning I woke up to contractions starting 10 minutes apart and they were rather strong. The night prior I had experienced these same kind of contractions for a good 3 hours and then they subsided, so this morning we weren’t going to stop our normal routine over them. We decided to spend our morning in worship with Pastor Jimi’s congregation at Hope of Glory. After Church Randy & I thought we should take advantage of this time and enjoy a lunch out, as it may be our last meal out alone, just the two of us.

After enjoying lunch at O’Charlies we thought we would take a look at video cameras. We both felt like we would  regret not having one to video tape our daughters birth when it happens.  While at Best Buy my contractions continued, some contractions were even 8 minutes apart at this time.  We found a video camera and headed home to let Winston out.

That night we went over to our friends, Andrew & Adria’s for dinner. At this point the contractions were a solid 8 minutes apart so we brought our hospital bag, just in case. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with our friends, some dessert and a game of Wits and Wagers (good game). We decided around 10:30 or so that we should head home. The contractions were getting more difficult for me to breath through as they were moving to my back.

Randy & I got home and after about an hour and a half of contracting at 5 minutes apart Randy & I headed to the hospital at 1/1:30am. When we arrived to the hosptial we were the only ones admitted into Labor & Delivery so we had primo treatement. When the doctor saw me he said I was at 3 cm. dilated, 92% effaced and the epidural was on it’s way – Hooray! By 3:30am I had recieved the epidural; Randy & I were finally able to catch a little sleep.

Monday, June 29th

Our Doctor, Dr. Nelson-Mason, arrived to our room around 6:00am and said I had progressed to 5cm. She then decided to break my water to see what kind of progression my contractions would make. Randy & I again tried to catch a little sleep. Around 9:00 or 10:00am (I was starting to lose track of time) the Doctor ordered to put me on pitosin. Shortly after that they took me off of it as my contractions were continuing strong and closer together by themselves and by 12:00/noon I was ready to push.

1:07pm, Mona Evelyn Riggs was born. Weighing in at 6lbs. 10oz. and measuring at 19 1/2 inches long. Mona had a little oxygen level problem as the umbilical cord was around her neck when delivered. After 30 minutes or so she was doing just fine and we were able to hold her for the first time. She was amazing, we couldn’t take our eyes off of her. We were blessed to have the following family and friends visit us tonight; Uncle Dave & Aunt Joy, Andrew & Adria, Katherine, Levi & Sean.

Tuesday, June 30th

Today Pop-pop & Mamaw Riggs as well as Grandpa & Mimi Nevins, Jason & Nancy Phelps and Linda Carlson came to see Mona at the hospital! There wasn’t too much holding time as Mona’s bilirubin levels tested too high. So she had to spend nearly the next 24 hours, possibly more, under a Bili Light. Mona did not like this, she was too exposed for comfort. This was hard for Mommy as I felt very helpless. We couldn’t craddle her or offer any comfort. This gave me a new appreciation for parents who suffer worse circumstances where they can’t hold and comfort their new borns.

Much to our surprise the blood work the next morning read at a lower level! This allowed Mona to be taken out from under the Bili Lights and we were able to go home that Wednesday with Mona as planned. We had grandparents waiting for us at home and offered all kinds of help and company that rest of the week. We have been so blessed with people surrounding us with love and celebrating in our new journey into parenthood, thank you!

What’s in a Name?

June 22, 2009 by stlouisriggs

As most all of you know, neither Hannah nor I grew up in the inner city.  In fact, we both grew up in quite different environments.  Me in a small farming community and Hannah in the quiet suburbs.  When we began to feel directed to urban ministry there were a lot of questions in our minds; a lot to think about.  We spent months praying and struggling with this calling.  During this time my relationship with God grew stronger.  I spent more time praying and reading the Word than I ever had before.  One day while having my scheduled devotional time I ran across a poem that stood out to me enough that I wrote it down.  Several months later after the decision had been made for us to move to St. Louis we were looking for a name for our new blog, something that would be relevant to the city.  I was looking through my journal for ideas and found the poem, What Christ Said.  It reads as follows:

What Christ Said

I said, “Let me walk in the fields.”

He said, “No, walk in the town.”

I said, “There are no flowers there.”

He said, “No flowers, but a crown.”

I said, “But the skies are black,

there is nothing but noise and din.”

And he wept as he sent me back,

“There is more,” he said, “there is sin.”

I said, “But the air is thick,

And fogs are veiling the sun.”

He answered, “Yet souls are sick,

And souls in the dark undone.”

I said, “I shall miss the light,

And friends will miss me, they say.”

He answered, “Choose tonight,

If I am to miss you, or they.”

I pleaded for time to be given.

He said, “Is it hard to decide?

It will not seem hard in Heaven

To have followed the steps of your Guide.”

I cast one look at the fields,

Then set my face to the town;

He said, “My child, do you yield?

Will you leave the flowers for the crown?”

Then into his hand went mine;

And into my heart came he;

And I walk in a light divine,

The path I had feared to see.

Called to the City

May 28, 2009 by stlouisriggs

Since the time of our engagement 2 and a half years ago we felt the Lord calling us to Urban Ministry. We found ourselves viewing the urban community as Christ did. A hurting people who needed to know of the Lord’s love, hope and grace. The Lord has taken us on a detour since then to Mooseheart Child City & School Inc. We see many reasons why the Lord brought us here, however He has now opened the door for us to finally serve Him in Urban St. Louis, MO. Randy and I will be spending this next year raising support to be full time missionaries with World Impact. We will be serving in the St. Louis mission field; striving to meet the needs of the people in that community so that they may come to know of the hope in our Lord, Christ Jesus as Savior. This first year Randy will be serving as World Impact/St. Louis’ Children’s Ministry Coordinator while I tend to our little one and volunteer at the center. The Lord has impressed upon our hearts individually and as a couple to spend our time here in this life to love on His people that they may know of His hope in a hopeless world. Would you join us in building the Kingdom through supported prayer. Pray not only for the relationships that await us in St. Louis but for the ones with our girls here at Mooseheart. Pray that these girls will see the Lord through our lives and that we may deepen our relationships with them.
